    Questo documento nasce dall’esigenza di approfondire l’aspetto hardware di questo nuovo Set Top Box di progettazione Koreana, comparso sul mercato nei primi mesi del 2009 e distribuito dall’azienda OpenSat che come dichiarato sul proprio sito di supporto, ne cura lo sviluppo del software di gestione in full-compliance hw/sw con il Development Kits Vantage8634 (m-board for IPTV Set-top Box with VoIP and ATSC / DVB) della Sigma Designs Inc..

    Poche sono le informazioni tecniche rese (pubbliche) che approfondiscano l’aspetto progettuale del prodotto con le sue capacit* hardware oggettive, elemento fondamentale per chi vorrebbe svilupparne il software e/o eventualmente effettuarne un porting su altri sistemi come ad esempio Enigma2 e renderne così disponibili le features, tramite l’interfaccia OSD di FrontEnd.

    Quello che stò per descrivere nasce, in verit*, anche dalla mania personale di controllare e cercare ulteriori informazioni tecniche su tutto quello che di elettronico mi capiti tra le mani.
    … non resisto più di una giornata e poi inesorabilmente lo devo aprire ! … povero AZBox direte !?!

    Ma veniamo al dunque …

    Come vediamo, il cuore del nostro AZBox Premium è il microprocessore con architettura MIPS SMP8634LF (SMP8630 Series) prodotto dalla Sigma Designs Inc..


    Questa CPU trova impiego in molteplici dispositivi Audio/Video Multimediali quali:

    - Media Center
    - IPTV Set-top Box (ATSC/DVB)
    - Player Blu-ray

    Il tutto viene supportato in Open_Source con il sistema operativo Linux (attualmente con Kernel 2.6.15).

    In rete troverete altri soggetti di mercato che commercializzano i propri dispositivi come CelrunTV, molti dei loro Set Top Box IPTV-DVB-ATSC derivano da uno stesso produttore HW per Sistemi Multimediali, come la Sigma Designs Inc … e che quindi … utilizzano la stessa CPU-MIPS e la stessa release Linux (Kernel module) … se non lo stesso Frontend grafico per l’OSD.

    Con ciò per segnalare che all’occorrenza, si può attingere per l’aggiornamento di alcuni moduli e/o dipendenze varie … ma anche semplicemente, per utilizzarne una Skin o un componente grafico allo scopo di personalizzare il ns. AZBox.

    Quindi per i più curiosi, armatevi di pazienza nella ricerca e per estrarli dai file di update che troverete googlando, munitevi di strumenti come WinISO, RomFs-Tools e Daemon Tools in ambiente Windows o per gli utenti Linux-OS semplicemente effettuando un mount Romfs sul proprio /dev/hdx:

    Per quest’ultimo aspetto declino ogni responsabilit*, se non avete una buona conoscenza dei sistemi linux, lasciate perdere !!!

    Per quel che concerne la parte di gestione software del ricevitore DVB-S, DVB-T o ATSC che sia, dando uno sguardo alla struttura driver & Co implementata nel firmware, è facile constatare che lo sviluppo sw è riconducibile, in molte parti, all’area Open_Source della comunit* di LinuxTV.org & soci. … (un grazie v* a @Ragno per la segnalazione).

    The MxL5007 from MaxLinear is a TV tuner IC that handles virtually all global standards in a single CMOS device, with performance that the vendor claims exceeds conventional so-called "can" (hybrid) devices, but at a lower price and power cost. 
    Configured via an I²C interface, the IC takes a 75? antenna signal as its input, and produces an IF output up to 44MHz. The design does not require an external low noise amplifer (LNA), tracking filter, SAW filter, loop filter or calibration of adjustments. 
    The 1.8-3.3V IC handles 44-1,002MHz and dissipates 300mW (typical). Among the standards supported are ATSC, DVB-T, DVB-T(H), DVB-H, ISDB, DVB-C, 64/256 QAM, analog cable, DOCSIS, NTSC, PAL and SECAM. Functions such as gain control, local oscillator generation, channel selectivity and RF loop-through and integrated on chip; if necessary, these functions—as well as receiving mode for the various standards—are controlled using an I²C interface. 
    Input return loss is 10dB for analog and digital modes, and noise figure is 4.5dB. Analog adjacent channel rejection is 60dB. For the RF loop-through, output return loss is 10dB, with gain of 0dB and a 6dB noise figure. Channel bandwidths can be programmed to be 4, 6, 7 and 8MHz, and the IC also includes automatic gain control (AGC) with 100dB range and received signal strength indicator (RSSI).

    Da notare che ci vengono restituiti gli “ID” di riconoscimento dei Tuner e per quello DVB-S2 anche il chip Demodulatore “Conexant CX24116” e qualche errore di string_txt “conexent”… :D

    Note: Purtroppo il problema dell’uso simultaneo del doppio Tuner DVB inizia da qui, i due bus data (J23-J26) Tuners 0-1 vengono commutati Mux/DeMux da questo IC (U39) e quindi non possono essere gestiti simultaneamente dalla CPU.

    StarCI is the common interface controller for digital
    satellite video receiver and digital TV to adopt the
    common interface standard(CENELEC EN-50221).
    
    Through StarCI, the receiver’s microprocessor
    reads the status of the common interface modules
    and gives a command to the modules and then the

    The WM8521 is a 96kHz stereo DAC with an integrated output
    op-amp stage, designed to generate a 2.0Vrms output signal
    directly, so reducing external component requirements in digital
    audio applications.
    WM8521 comes into two variants WM8521HC and WM8521H9
    which offers different line drive output capabilities. WM8521HC
    outputs 2Vrms at 12V supply, while WM8521H9 outputs
    2.0Vrms at 9V supply. WM8521HC/H9 are designed for cost
    sensitive consumer digital audio applications requiring 2Vrms
    line output.
    A 24-bit multi-bit sigma delta DAC is used with oversampling
    digital interpolation filters. Digital audio input word lengths from
    16-32 bits and sampling rates from 8kHz to 96kHz are
    supported.
    The audio interface supports I2S, Right Justified and DSP digital
    audio formats.
    The devices are controlled via a hardware interface which
    provides access to features including de-emphasis, mute and
    data formats. These devices are pin equivalent and are
    available in a 14-pin SOIC package.

    C' qualcosa di simile anche per il modello PLUS ?

    Pi che altro mi piacerebbe sapere che tuner Sat usa (senza doverlo smontare).
    Dai driver caricati direi che c' qualcosa con STV90x e STV6110x
    Ma quali chip di preciso (STV903bac, STV903bab, STV900aac, ...ecc) ?
